Recognising Depression

What is it?

Depression is not 'feeling sad' or 'feeling down in the dumps' its much more than this and for some can be completely debilitating and make living a really painful experience.  The following are some symptoms people experience:

  • Feeling sad or down despite everything being ok
  • Feeling irritable with no real reason why. Feeling easily frustrated with yourself or others. Becoming easily agitated...this can sometimes feel like wanting to 'get out fo your skin.' Feelings of restlessness but no energy to do anything.
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies that you used to enjoy. You just don't like doing them anymore.
  • You are tired all the time but can't get to sleep, or wake up multiple times in the night.
  • You sleep for 10+ hours and wake up just as tired as when you went to bed...and the thought of getting out of bed and having to face another day is too much to bare.
  • You've lost or gained a significant amount of weight because you either can't face eating or you can't seem to stop eating.
  • You have difficulties making decisions about the simplest things, such as what to buy at the supermarket for dinner.
  • You can't seem to stay focussed on any one thing, and keep getting distracted.
  • You can't seem to concentrate on anything, or absorb anything you read, having to read the same thing over and over again, and yet you still cn't remember what it is you read.
  • You are tired all the time and getting through the day is a challenge.
  • You have feelings of worthlessness or guilt despite not really having done anything maliscious to anyone.
  • You have trouble remembering things, when that hasn't always been the case.
  • You have thoughts of death, dying, or suicide.

You do not have to be experiencing all of these to have depression, but if you feel like you can relate to half of these, you may be experiencing depression.  If you are having thoughts of suicide, please talk to someone, or visit https://www.papyrus-uk.org/# for phone or text support.

What causes it?

Depression doesn't have a single cause. Most likely it’s caused by a combination of factors that may include:
  • Family history of depression
  • Brain Chemistry
  •  Life events and stressors (academic, personal, or financial stress)
  •  Environmental factors (like a change of seasons)
  • Serious illnesses
  •  Losses
  • Experiencing prolonged bias/discrimination

What can be done about it?

Therapy is a process and each person's sessions are different, since everyone is coming in with a different history and a unique set of circumstances.  That being said, I can:
  • help pinpoint the things in your life that may be contributing to the problem
  • identify negative or distorted thinking patterns that contribute to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness that accompany depression
  • explore other learned thoughts and behaviors that create problems for you and contribute to your depression
  • help you regain a sense of control and pleasure in your life
